Welcome to the Faculty of Engineering

Overview of the Faculty

The Faculty of Engineering was established in 1968 and was then named School of Industrial Technology with Professor Sir Edouard Lim Fat as Head of the School. During the first decade of its existence, the main activities were to train students at certificate and diploma levels in line with the mission of a developmental university. The first engineering undergraduate courses were offered in 1976 and the first taught MSc courses in 1997. The first PhD was awarded in 1984. Graduates from the Faculty today practice engineering in all spheres of the economy and significantly contribute to the economic, social and sustainable development of the island.

The Faculty offers four-year undergraduate BEng (Hons) programmes which satisfy the academic requirements of the Council of Registered Professional Engineers (CRPE) for registration as Professional Engineers. The engineering programmes are aligned to the prescribed competency standards of signatory members of the Washington Accord. In this context, the programmes are accredited by the Engineering Council of South Africa, a member of the Washington Accord. We equally offer a range of BSc and MSc programmes in focused areas.

The academic programmes offered by the Faculty include industrial placement for students to experience appropriate exposure to the world of work. These placements often lead to industry based design projects and major works in relation to final year thesis. The collaboration with industry remains one of the main strengths of the engineering degrees offered by the Faculty of Engineering.

In addition to offering a state of the art environment for teaching and learning, the Faculty has developed research capacity in a number of thematic areas such as waste management, hydrology, construction engineering, urban planning, energy management, renewable energy, materials, and operations management among others. Our advisory/consultancy services are sought by both the public and private sector organisations. The Faculty is also active in a number of research projects run in collaboration with local/regional and international partners. From being part of a developmental university in the late 1970s, the Faculty has aligned itself to the new vision of a research intensive and entrepreneurial university.

The Faculty of Engineering is composed of five departments namely Applied Sustainability and Enterprise Development, Civil Engineering, Chemical and Environmental Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Mechanical and Production Engineering. We are serviced by 116 staff composed of 52 full-time academic staff, 37 technical staff and 27 administrative/support staff.
