Message from the Head of Department

Chemical engineering is a discipline influencing numerous areas of technology. In broad terms, chemical engineers conceive and design processes to produce, transform, and transport materials — beginning with experimentation in the laboratory followed by the implementation of the technology in full-scale production. Today chemical plants encompass a considerable range and Chemical engineers are in great demand because of the large number of industries that depend on the synthesis and processing of chemicals and materials. In addition to traditional careers in the chemical, energy, and oil industries, chemical engineers enjoy increasing opportunities in wide range of industries: from sugar manufacturing, food processing, textile, tourism , power production, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals.

Chemical Engineering fundamentals draw from physics chemistry mathematics and increasingly biology which is combined with engineering art to understand and control processes. The discipline is expanding and the new science and engineering are helping develop technologies that are more efficient safer and environmentally friendly.

The University of Mauritius has produced over one thousand Chemical Engineers with specialization in either renewable energy or environmental engineering. Many of them have made important contributions to society over the years in terms of products and processes by working locally or internationally.

The breadth and versatility of their training will continue to open many new opportunities for chemical engineers in the future.

The Chemical Engineering Department at the University of Mauritius is committed to excellence in Chemical Engineering education in the context of the evolving discipline and has successfully embarked on accreditation process of its engineering programmes with the Engineering Council of South Africa which is a signatory to the Washington Accord.

The Department has a strong core curriculum complemented by specialist modules in the important emerging areas including energy engineering, environmental management, quality systems, risk management, waste water management, industrial ecology, solid waste management and climate change.

Research is an important focus of activity and the Department has an excellent faculty who lead high quality research programmes in a wide spectrum of areas.

The Department is provided with very good experimental facilities for research and has a strong technical staff. The Department has robust links with industry with interactions spanning consultancy sponsored research and continuing education. The alumni are important stakeholders and have provided generous support in different ways and facilitates integration of fresh engineers to the job market.

Our mission is to provide a high-quality education experience that will prepare our graduates to assume leadership positions within chemical and other associated industries. The vision of the department is aligned to its home University to be entrepreneurial and research engaged. Working as a team, the department is committed to raise the standard of the University as an internationally recognized institution for undergraduate chemical engineering program, capacity building in climate change mitigation and adaptation, and postgraduate training in the field of sustainable energy engineering and environment management coupled with research strengths in uncovering biomass potentials, process systems engineering, life cycle assessment, renewable energy, wastewater engineering and circular economy.
